The Achieve Formula by: David Michael Walsh a book that takes a look at using Metaphysic to achieve.
On the morning of January 30th, 2021, I found myself not able to sleep. The thought "Achieve your dream" was running through my mind. Try as I may I could not clear this thought from my head and go to sleep.
I decided to get up, go to the computer and write. I came up with an article that I posted on Facebook. A few months went by. My intuition continued to nag at me to write a book on the subject of achieving by using the concepts of metaphysics and universal laws, namely, 'The Law of Attraction'.
Anyone else awake? I've been lying awake since 3:30 am. It is now 5:23 am. I am wide awake and posting non-sense on Facebook. What is the point? Do I get up? Do I continue to just lay here? What comes next in this life long journey wanting to achieve, happiness, success, wealth? What steps do I have to take to obtain my deepest hopes and dreams? A book title comes to mind, "Achieve Your Dream" by David Michael Walsh
ok I'm up.
Chapter 1 Achieve
I don’t know who you are or what it is that you want to achieve. I will assume you are someone who wants to be healthy, happy, abundant and successful. There are all most eight billion people on the planet. The people where we get our information from, the generalizations, the stuff we read about, quote and get most of our information from, the they. (They, I love that word, they.)
The statistics are, that one percent of those eight billion, that would be about 80 million people, will be the world’s richest and most influential people. Three percent will be multi-millionaires, having assets of say, more than 10 million dollars, five percent will be millionaires, with assets of at least five million dollars, 10 – 15 percent will be wealthy, corporate executives or entrepreneurs.
The upper-middle class population will be about 15 – 18 percent, with assets of $100,000 to under three million dollars. Forty plus percent are the middle-class, earning somewhere between, 40 thousand to 100 thousand dollars per year, in the United States.
As we go down the list, the bottom tier, 36% of the world’s population live in poverty. That is around 2.8 billion people, people living in the world in poverty. That is a staggering number.
If you want to achieve anything in this life, based on Merriam-Webster’s definition of the word achieve, you are going to need to exert effort to accomplish the end result to become successful. The actions and the amount of effort you will need to take, will depend on what it is you want to achieve.
Someone who works in a trade industry, such as; builder, carpenter, electrician, farmer, firefighter, hospitality, mason, mechanic, police person, plumber, restaurant industry, transportation, and others, were once known as “Blue-Collar” workers. They need specialized skills and knowledge relative to those professions. To achieve in a “White Collar” profession, some examples are; Computer Programmer, Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer, Politician, Investment Banker and others, you will need a completely different set of skills and knowledge than those of the “Blue Collar” professions.
Outside of these two generalizations are professions in the Arts’; Entertainers, Actors, Dancers, Singers, Song Writers, Stage Crew, Photographers, Authors, Artist, Comedians, Athletics’ and more. Still other professions like teachers, home makers and professions that do not seem to fit into those two, generalized categories require their own set of skills and knowledge.
All professions require similar, soft skills. Soft skills are things like a good attitude, a pleasant personality, an interest in the work you are doing and enthusiasm. Soft skills can be developed if they do not come naturally to you. Other examples of soft skills are; Communications, Team Work, Work Ethic, Time Management, and an Interpersonal skill like diplomacy.
Humans, classifying other humans. It has been going on since the beginning of humanity.
There are a lot of things humans have in common. As I was tempted to write, the one thing we all have in common. “We all want to achieve something,” or do we? Below is a list of things I belief you will need, to achieve. This is my “Achieve Formula”.
· Vision / Imagination / Plan
· Desire / Motivation / Enthusiasm
· Skill / Talent / Other
· Knowledge / Training / Experience
· Action / Belief / Understanding (Connect to Spirit)
As list go, not a very long one, or has it been intentionally designed to not look long? Five bullet points, but there are actually fifteen items. The fifteen items have sub-items not listed.
Have you ever actually taken the time to envision what it is you truly want? If you had, you would not be reading this book. Bullet one is a huge deal. Find the time to do this.
Find a quiet place to think and document your vision. How do you imagine you will spend the next X amount of time doing Y, the things you will need to do in order to achieve the thing you want to achieve? Once you have determined the thing you want to be doing, draft the plan Z, on the how you could make it happen.
When documenting your vision, use these sub-steps for bullet number one of the “Achieve Formula”.
· Start the document from the end result
o Describe in detail your achievement
Example: Receiving a reward, a large check, a trip, a car, a promotion, a new job, find the love of your life, better health, etc.…
· Document the details of your goal achieved
o Example: Started your own company, invented a new product, etc.…
· Document the feeling you will have seeing your achievement, Achieved
o Feeling of gratitude, joy, happiness, accomplishment, love
· Document your general plan on how it will come about
o Write the book, song, computer program, sign a new client, invent something, paint the painting, train and make the team, design the building, product, etc.…
You may have heard of the term, “Vision Board”. This is another way of documenting your vision of the things you want to achieve. The old school vision board is created with poster board paper. Pictures of things you want, or things you want to achieve are pasted or taped to the poster board. The vision board is than place where you will see it often.
The idea behind the vision board, is that you will be programing your subconscious mind with the things you want, and they will eventually manifest.
Here is an example of a documented vision statement. Starting from the end result and looking back at the efforts it took to get there.
I have a vision of myself being called up on stage to be presented a prestigious award for my music. My imagination details that two-minute presentation. I am sitting in the audience watching my ballet being performed by a professional ballet company in a major city. At the end of the performance, during the curtain calls, the director calls me up on stage.
I walk on stage to receive my acknowledgement from the director and I hear the applause from the audience as I return to my seat. I can feel those feelings of joy, pride and accomplishment. A tear of happiness runs down my face as I receive a hug from my spouse as I retake my seat. I think back on all of the steps it took to get to this moment. All those letters, emails and phone calls. All of the rejection.
So many times, I reached out to every professional ballet company I could find. I was just about to give up when I made one more call, and they answered. Then they agreed to perform my ballet. All the hard work, to get the music just right. All the rehearsals. All the delays, All the effort to find the financing and sponsors. And now this moment is finally here. I did it.
Let’s take a look at the five bullet points in just a little more detail.
Bullet One: Vision / Imagination / Plan
The importance of documenting the vision, it sets the stage for the thing that it is, that you want to achieve. Keep it to yourself. You keep it to yourself because you want to keep outside influences away from sabotaging your belief that you can achieve your vision.
As you document your vision, let your imagination fill in the details and let yourself feel the feelings you will have when you see the vision achieved. Joy, happiness, pride, and accomplishment are all feelings that could be felt in your person as you play out achieving your vision.
Item three of bullet one is “The Plan”.
This is the how or it is just an idea of the how your vision will come about. The plan is a draft. It will assuredly change over time. Not every part of the plan has to be completed by you. You could get others to do certain parts of the plan for you. You document the plan to create action items, a to do list so to speak. If you are serious about achieving, a documented schedule will be the tool to keep you on track.
Bullet two: Desire / Motivation / Enthusiasm
These three emotions are intangible things. You cannot go to the store and purchase a gallon of desire, motivation or enthusiasm. You can go on the internet and watch motivation speeches you say.
But let’s face it, these are usually just temporary boost of motivation. They are not typically long lasting. How much of these three intangible feelings will you need to achieve? The answer is, you will know you have enough of these intangible emotions once you have achieved the thing it is that you wanted to achieve.
There will be blocks to acquiring enough desire, enough motivation, and enough enthusiasm. You will have to over-come these blocks. An author’s publisher may pressure an author to write a new book.
The author will reply that they have “Writers Block”. If the author does not overcome their “Writer’s Block” they more than likely, will not write another book. If you do not overcome the things that are blocking you, then you will not achieve the thing you want to achieve.
What are some of the possible blocks? Fear, Doubt, Negative Self-Talk, Lack of Self-Confidence, Lack of Knowledge, Lack of Training, Lack of Skill, Lack of Experience, Lack of Connections, Lack of Money, Lack of Talent. The list could go on forever.
Your strongest tool to overcome the emotional blocks of fear, doubt, and your entire lack of list, in your mind or sub-conscious mind, those things that could be blocking your desire, motivation and enthusiasm could be understanding. (Item 3 of Bullet 5)
Desire, Motivation and Enthusiasm may seem to come out of thin air. They come in waves or cycles. At times you feel motivated, at other times not. You can control these waves and cycles with your thoughts.
Stay at it, try, try, again. Get back up on that horse. Pull up those boot straps, go knock on another door. Don’t take no for an answer, (but be polite about it). Find another way around.
There is a solution to every problem. Face the lion on your pathway. Understanding your blocks may take some time to develop. It could require additional knowledge, awareness, incite from another person or action. Let’s add determination to your tool bag along with persistence and intuitive actions.
Bullet Three: Skill / Talent / Other
Bullet three is important from the physical, three-dimensional sense of things. While bullet two items, desire, motivation and enthusiasm reside in the intangible realm. Skill, talent and the cooperation of others are part of the physical world. Skills can be developed, they can be physical skills, mental, intellectual and a whole list of other things.
It has been said that every person is born with certain talents. Genetics can provide you with natural born talents that are passed down from your ancestors. Perhaps you have a talent for music. Singing for example, just comes naturally.
People are drawn to you when they hear you sing. You never took lessons. You just know how to do it. You can’t explain why, you just instinctively can sing. Does this talent automatically make it easier for you to achieve a successful career in music? Perhaps yes, perhaps not. You may still need help from others to achieve a successful career in music.
The right connections, the right talent agent, the right manager, and a host of others. Humans can make it hard on other humans to achieve.
Competition makes the world seem like there is only a limited number of positions at the top. There is only one champion, only one gold medalist only one winner of the race. Don’t let these societal bench marks stop you from achieving. Society may say there is no room at the top for everyone. But there are different degrees of success and achievement. It is all a matter of perspective.
The other, item in bullet three, has to do with being at the right place at the right time. Having a connection to the right people, at the right moment and place. Timing is everything, a phrase I’ve heard often.
Bullet Four: Knowledge / Training / Experience
The first two items in this list are the easiest to come by, Knowledge and Training. There are a multitude of ways you can use to obtain knowledge and training. There are books and courses on every subject imaginable that you may want to learn about. That is not to say, obtaining that knowledge and training will not be a challenge.
If things do not come to you easily, you will have to work for them. Experience takes time. Knowledge and training take time, as well. Desire, motivation, enthusiasm from bullet number 2, you’ll need these over the entire course of your achievement journey.
People will set standards and require you to meet those standards of knowledge, training and experience to achieve in certain professions. Examples: Medical profession, the Legal Profession, In the field of Science, Scientist, The Accounting Profession, CPA, Accountant, Some Sales Professions require certification such as a Real Estate Agent, there are too many to list.
If your vision necessitates knowledge, training and experience that requires certification you will have no recourse but to comply.
Bullet Five: Action / Belief / Understanding (Connect to Spirit, God, Nature, Source, Universe)
Action, nothing happens without action. If you want to achieve, you will have to take action. How much action you might ask? As much as it takes. You may think this is a non-answer. But it is the answer. You want to be a doctor?
You will have to take all of the courses, you will have to pass all of the examinations, and not just pass them, you will have to pass them at the level they say you have to pass them at. You have to go to medical school, you have to do an internship, residency and everything they tell you to do. A lot of action happening to achieve a doctor’s degree.
At the core of what you want to achieve you have to belief you can achieve it. That is plain and simple. Finally, Understanding, this is where metaphysics comes into play. Those unseen forces that are at work in the universe. A debatable subject since it cannot be proven or un proven.
Many people believe that humans are spiritual beings, in a human body. Many believe that if you can connect with your source, your source will guide your actions. Whatever label you want to put on your source, you can use that energy to motivate and drive your actions to achieve. The human race is still evolving and our potential is, unlimited.
If you don’t believe in such things, metaphysics, spirits, higher power, God, and things like destiny, I believe you can still achieve. Achieving is a process. There are steps you can follow to anything that it is you want to achieve. Those steps may not as yet been documented like the recipe to bake a cake, but they exist.
The five bullet points above are more of a formula. A formula has variables. The value of each variable changes depending on a multitude of factors.
Unlike the step-by-step process of a recipe, so much of a certain ingredient, mixed together during a certain part of the baking process, the ingredients are the same every time. A cup of this, an ounce of that and a teaspoon of whatever.
If a person whose definition of achieve, is to becoming a millionaire by selling a product on Amazon for example, they follow the exact steps as someone else, and they do not achieve becoming a millionaire.
The only difference is they will tell you is they tried to sell a different product. What happened? Why did the process not work for them? Is the reason for them not achieving only because they chose a different product to sell? The company that sold them the course, on how to sell on Amazon did not guarantee them success. I offer up that there may be other underlying reasons.
The reason they did not achieve, may have to do with any of the fifteen items in the five bullet points above. You may have the greatest product in the world and everyone could find it useful, that does not guarantee you success.
Let’s follow the five bullet points of the achieve formula to achieve writing a book as an example.
Before we even get to putting the achieve formula to work, we need to start with understanding. Understanding exactly what you want to achieve. The process of achieving a successful career as an author, begins with first your understanding of your definition of the word achieve. Second your definition of the word success.
Your understanding of those two words compared to your belief of how the rest of the world defines those two words, that will also be important. If there is a conflict between the two definitions, this could create a block in your ability to achieve.
Is a best-selling author a successful author? Has a best-selling author achieved? Your first response to those two questions may be yes. But the answer to these questions for every author could be yes or no. Every author is different. Every author may have a different meaning for the words achieve and success.
A first-time author may believe they have achieved by just completing the writing of a book and getting it into print. While a best-selling author and their publisher may believe they have not succeeded since their fourth book only sold x number of copies.
